KTM Red Bull Factory Team looks solid for Motocross GP Season
| When the KTM Red Bull Factory team rides out in Valkenswaard for the opening event of the 2007 MX GP season they will do it with an air of confidence, team solidarity and KTM machines that mean they are well equipped for continued success in the sport. |
The factory team – David Philippaerts of Italy and Spain Jonathan Barragan in the MX1 class and South African Tyla Rattray and Tommy Searle of Britain in the MX2 saddles are now under the inspired leadership of 10-times MX title winner Stefan Everts. The Belgian motocross maestro retired from active racing at the end of last season and has entered into the team leadership job with as much passion and commitment was he exhibited on the track. Everts makes a point of dedicating time and attention to each team member and his mentoring role has already increased rider confidence and created excellent team morale going into the season. “I am still very new,” Everts said with characteristic modesty before the start of the season. “I had to start somewhere and time will tell if I’m working in the right direction.” He said he hoped the team would win the MX2 title and be in the top three for MX1. “I want all the riders to work together on the track, to have a good team spirit and to use each other to advance to the next level,” he said.
Pit Beirer, KTM Offroad Director is also very enthusiastic about the team structure and training methods.
“We are going in a completely new direction with out young motocross team which we put together in a completely new way, together with Stefan Everts. “Our new MX1 and MX2 teams learnt in joint training sessions and motivation events that we must help and respect each other if we want to be an unbeatable team.” He said it was unique that four world class riders could work and train together at this level for months on end. “Every training session becomes a small race.”
The factory team met for a concentrated pre-season training camp at Stefan’s motocross school in Spain in January, an occasion for Everts to instill his “All for one and one for all “philosophy and to underline that he wants the riders to strive for excellent results but to also have fun doing it.
In the run-up to the opening competition in Valkenswaard, Netherlands the KTM Red Bull riders have not only consistently put in solid results in pre-season internationals but have also been meeting with Stefan for weekly training sessions in Belgium and France. “I am satisfied with the preparation,” Everts said. “I think the results speak for themselves.” All team members are in good health and spirits. This year all KTM motocross factory riders will be wearing the KTM Leatt neck brace, a revolutionary new protection for the prevention of traumatic neck and spine injuries. The brace, which has been called the “helmet for the neck” has been developed according to a design concept of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Chris Leatt of South Africa.
David Philippaerts who was third in the MX2 World championships last season has his sights set on the MX1 title in 2007 while Jonathan Barragan is going for a top three place in the championship. Both are onboard KTM 450 SX-F machines. Durban-born Tyla Rattray took four Grand Prix victories and a total of eight podiums in 2006 for 4th position in the championships. The youngest factory team member Tommy Searle who will celebrate his 17th birthday in the mid 2007 season is recognized as one of the most outstanding young talents in motocross. Searle signed as a factory team member in 2006. Tyla and Tommy are riding KTM 250 SX-F machines.
“For me as Offroad Director it gave me a lot of pleasure to see how the team was put together and the cooperation with Stefan means we are better prepared than ever before,” Pit Beirer said. “I am very proud and I can’t wait for the first race to start!”
The opening event in Valkenswaard, a race that tests riders over sandy conditions, is the first of 15 Grands Prix and is scheduled for April 1. The competition winds up back in the Netherlands on September 2 in Lierop after sweeping through European venues, plus overseas races in Tyla’s hometown of Durban, South Africa and in Sugo, Japan.

KTM Enduro Factory Team going to titles in 2007
| The KTM Enduro Factory Team plans to go on the attack to retain the Enduro World Championship titles in 2007 and above all, to have fun riding their machines. |
The KTM team goes into the MAXXIS FIM WORLD ENDURO CHAMPIONSHIP 2007 as title holders in all classes but they still plan to go on the attack, work hard and further improve the team performance. This year KTM is fielding a blue ribbon Enduro team but competition will be tough and it will be a challenge to retain the titles and stay on the top of the action.
Work has continued unabated on fine tuning the KTM machines, and with the KTM Factory Team and their “A travelling laboratory” this will be an ongoing process to make sure that every inch of performance is available to enhance the considerable line-up of rider skills.
Team Boss Fabio Farioli has excellent winning talent on which to set his hopes: Juha Salminen and Alessandro Belometti in E1, Samuli Aro and Fabien Planet in E2 and Ivan Cervantes and Marko Tarkkala in E3. Salminen is returning from the USA to rejoin the competition and takes a modest stand, saying he feels like a beginner “New bike, new ambitions, and new people around me. I approach this season as I did in 1998, my first year with the 125cc.”
“I have known Juha for many years. He has been with us before and he has won many times before. I think he is one of the best riders and he’s very professional and more representative of our age. I am hoping for a great season for him. It won’t be easy but all the team are working towards achieving this objective,” Farioli commented.
Reigning champion Samuli Aro of Finland opens the season as favourite in the E2 class and rides a 450 EXC Racing emblazoned with the prestigious No. 1. He is joined by his factory team-mate Frenchman Fabien Planet on a 250 EXC. The team boss say Fabien has now matured after his early experience with two strokes and says the 250 is just right for his abilities.
With title holder David Knight off to the USA to ride for KTM in the GNCC Series, KTM has two hot irons in the E3 fire with Marko Tarkkala and double E1 champion Ivan Cervantes, both onboard 525 EXC Racing machines.
The season opens in Östersund, Sweden on March 18, 2007.

GNCC Series – Round 2 Washington, GA
| In round two of the GNCC Series KTM again showed up on the podium in both the XC1 and XC2 classes. |
In XC1 action Robbie Jenks had a top 10 start and rode strong throughout the race picking up positions and finished in third. David Knight had a good start and rounded the first lap in second place but went downhill from there. Knight began to lose places due to a broken hand injury and couldn’t gain his momentum back.
“Robbie had a great day today and I’m very happy with his finish. David had many issues today especially with his broken hand but we will improve. Luckily there was a good mix of finished this round compared to last so we are not completely out of the championship chase,” said KTM Off Road Team Manager Antti Kallonen.
In XC2 class action Kurt Caselli again stood atop the podium at days end. Caselli took the holeshot and pulled away from there. Duvall gave chase for a few laps but Caselli won the class by over 2 minutes. Also in the XC2 class Justin Williamson pulled out a seventh place finish.
“I had a really good start but didn’t feel comfortable at first. I ended up pulling away and riding consistently. It was a good week and my bike was great. I’m really happy with it. I just want to thank KTM, my sponsors, and my manager, Antti Kallonen,” said Caselli.
Robbie Jenks David Knight
David Knight: “After finishing the first round of the championship I thought my hand was going to be ok here at round two. The track here wasn’t as whooped out or as rough as in Florida but I just couldn’t hold on over the square edged bumps. It’s so frustrating because I got a much better start than I did at round one and was second behind Glenn Kearney for much of the first lap. Then I started having problems holding on. I made a few mistakes and some riders came passed me and I couldn’t get going because my hand hurt so much every time I hit a bump.
“I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to run with the fastest riders so I just tried to keep riding to try and get some points. I had to keep stopping out on the track because of my hand. The other thing that’s so annoying is that even with my hand problem I was riding at the same speed as Glenn Kearney at the end of the race and he finished fifth.
“I’m going to be heading home for eight days now before the next race so I will be able to see my physio and hopefully get things fixed before round three.”
Next event will be round three of the US GNCC series, The Steele Creek GNCC at Morganton, North Carolina, March 25.

Amp’d Mobile World Supercross: 3rd round Daytona, FL
|
The Daytona Supercross is a unique beast. |
More motocross than Supercross, Daytona has always held a high spot on the list of races you really want to do well at. With that said Mike Alessi, Jeff Alessi and Zach Osborne rolled into Daytona on a mission to get KTM their first podium of the 2007 season.
Things didn’t look good at the start as Mike Alessi got tangled up with another rider at the start of his heat race and barely qualified, working his way from dead last to eighth by then end of the short 6 lap heat race. Jeff Alessi had a little better race as he battled with and beat previous race winner Ben Townley for the fourth spot.
While both of the Alessi brothers made it into the main event Zach Osborne failed to qualify and pretty much had a day he would rather forget.
The start of the main event went extremely well for the Alessi brothers with Jeff rounding the first lap in fifth and his brother Mike right behind him in Sixth. Jeff would work up as high as third during the main event, but eventually finish seventh. Mike may have started in sixth, but he quickly worked his way into third and controlled the final spot on the podium for the last 10 laps.
Congratulations to Mike for his first Supercross podium of the 2007 season.
